1. September sendoff: Ariat Playoff Series continues with Omaha’s River City Roundup
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A star-studded field is headed to Omaha, Neb., as a total of 16 world champions with a combined 47 world titles highlight the 96-contestant field for the Ak-Sar-Ben River City Roundup, the third of four events of the $1.62 million Ariat Playoffs Series.

Competitors in the Omaha Round of the Ariat Playoffs will compete for a share of the $400,000 purse when the three-day event starts Sept. 27 at the Qwest Center in downtown Omaha. The Wrangler ProRodeo Tour’s Omaha Round will be televised on Fox Sports Net, with three separate one-hour telecasts beginning the week of Oct. 20.

Action takes place at 7 p.m. (CT) each night. All contestants compete the first two nights. The semifinals, which will feature the top eight competitors in each event after two rounds, get under way on Sept. 29, with the four-person final round immediately following.

Four-time and reigning World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile highlights the field. He is joined by three other reigning world champions in attendance this week in Omaha – bareback rider Will Lowe of Canyon, Texas; team roping heeler Allen Bach of Weatherford, Texas; and saddle bronc rider Chad Ferley of Oehrichs, S.D.

Omaha’s team roping lineup boasts six world champions, the most of any event. Eight-time world champion Speed Williams of Prineville, Ore.; seven-time titlist Jake Barnes of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and 2005 World Champion Clay Tryan highlight the heading side, while world champion heelers Allen Bach of Weatherford, Texas; Clay O’Brien Cooper of Morgan Mill, Texas; and Walt Woodard of Stockton, Calif., will take aim at Omaha titles.

Three world champions headline the field in both bareback riding and saddle bronc riding, with each event’s reigning champion hoping to use Omaha as a springboard for a repeat world title.

Lowe, the reigning and three-time World Champion Bareback Rider, enjoyed one of his finest hours in Omaha in 2003 after tying the world record with a 94-point ride aboard Kesler Rodeo’s Sky Reach. His victory in Omaha propelled him to the first of his three world titles.

Last year, Ferley won the saddle bronc riding title in Omaha, paving the way for his first world title.

The top 10 contestants in each event based on total prize money from the cumulative Wrangler ProRodeo Tour regular season standings plus the three Ariat Playoff Series rodeos qualify for the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Championship, presented by Texas Stampede, Nov. 9-11 in Dallas.

The Playoffs started in Caldwell, Idaho, with the top 35 contestants from the 21-city Wrangler ProRodeo Tour and each event champion from the 2007 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo. After Caldwell, the field was whittled to the top 22 from the cumulative Tour standings, Caldwell playoff champs, plus DNCFR titlists, as the top athletes headed for the second Ariat Playoff rodeo, the Puyallup (Wash.) Pro Rodeo.

From there, the top 11 in the Tour standings and each event’s champion from Puyallup advanced to Omaha.

2. Brazile wins in Albuquerque, Amarillo
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Trevor Brazile, the reigning and four-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy, continued on his path for a fifth title after winning titles last weekend at the New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo in Albuquerque and the Amarillo (Texas) Tri-State Fair Pro Rodeo.

Brazile, of Decatur, Texas, earned all-around cowboy status for both rodeos, bagging $7,597 in tie-down roping and team roping Albuquerque and won another $7,668 in team roping, tie-down roping and steer roping in Amarillo.

In Albuquerque, Brazile won the tie-down roping title after recording a total time of 14.9 seconds on two head. He joined forces with Patrick Smith, the 2005 world champion team roper from Midland, Texas, to claim the top spot in Amarillo, roping three steers in 14.2 seconds.

Other highlights of the weekend included the DeMoss brothers, Cody and Heith, winning titles in Albuquerque and the Southwestern International PRCA Rodeo in El Paso, Texas.

Cody DeMoss, of Heflin, La., rode the legendary Harry Vold saddle bronc horse Sun Devil for 88 points for the win in El Paso. Heith, his younger brother, won both rounds and the average in Albuquerque, which included a 90-point ride aboard Beutler Brothers and Cervi’s Battle Zone in the second round.

Five-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Billy Etbauer won his event title in Amarillo after recording an 87-point ride aboard Carr Pro Rodeo’s Ginger.

3. Rodeo News and Notes

This one-of-a-kind event will take place on Dec. 7 at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa’s Grand Ballroom. Nomination forms and ticket order forms may be found on www.prorodeo.com .

Stutes’ night to remember. Ryan Stutes had everything go right at the Four States Fair Rodeo in Texarkana, Ark., on Sept. 21, recording a 93-point ride aboard Classic Pro Rodeo’s Cattle Drive and winning the event title.

The score came within one point of the PRCA world record in bareback riding, shared by Wes Stevenson (2002) and Will Lowe (2003).

“To be 90 in bareback riding is a feat in itself,” said Stutes, 23, a recent graduate of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. “But 93 is just unbelievable. That’s all I can say. After that, you couldn’t have wiped the smile off my face. That was something else.”

Barton cleared for Convention. Derek Barton can once again make plans to be in Las Vegas this winter.

Barton, a PRCA announcer from Wheatland, Wyo., who was diagnosed with colon cancer in May that was later found to have spread to his lymph nodes, recently received encouraging news following a CT scan last week in Cheyenne, Wyo.

“They found no cancer in the chest area, abdomen or the colon area,” Barton, 42, said. “They didn’t see any residual cancer anywhere else, either. So, right now, it looks like the chemo is working. And they did clear me to go to the (PRCA) Convention in Las Vegas. That’s a good sign that I can go ahead and go. My plan is to hit it hard in 2008.”

Following the cancer discovery, Barton underwent colon surgery on May 15 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. When he had recovered from the surgery, he met with oncologists to discuss a strategy to beat the disease, which had spread into his lymph system.

Barton recently completed the seventh of 12 scheduled chemotherapy treatments. Every 14 days, he travels an hour to Cheyenne, where he undergoes a six-hour treatment on-site. Then, he returns home to Wheatland with a pump, which distributes another dose of therapy during a 48-hour period.

He then returns to Cheyenne to have the pump disconnected.

“It’s good to hear some good news,” Barton said.

History of the PRCA
The PRCA was created in 1936 when a group of cowboys walked out of a rodeo at the Boston Garden to protest the actions of rodeo promoter W.T. Johnson, who refused to add the cowboys' entry fees to the rodeo's total purse. Johnson finally gave in to the cowboys' demands, and the successful "strike" led to the formation of the Cowboys' Turtle Association. The cowboys chose that name because, while they were slow to organize, when push came to shove they weren't afraid to stick their necks out to get what they wanted.
In 1945, the Turtles changed their name to the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) and in 1975, the organization became the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The National Headquarters office moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1979. That same year the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy opened for the first time.
