BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. --- Lyle Welling couldn’t have been any happier with his success at the 89th Annual Black Hills Round-Up July 3-5.
Welling, from Crawford, Neb., competes in the saddle bronc riding and was the lucky contestant to get on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco reigning saddle bronc horse of the year Miss Congeniality on the Fourth of July.
Miss Congeniality, owned by Powder River Rodeo from Riverton, Wyo., did her best to buck off Welling, but he managed to last the full eight seconds. It was the first time the Wyoming bucking horse has performed in the 2008 season. It ended with an 85-point marking and a rodeo win. That score was worth $1,960 for Welling who couldn’t stop smiling.
Area rodeo fans had plenty to smile about on July 5 as local bull rider Brian Curtis finished at the top of the leader board with an 83-point ride. He earned $2,674 for his effort aboard D&H Cattle Company’s Crash Cart.
This is the second consecutive title for Curtis, who lives in Belle Fourche. “It’s great to be able to do this in front of a home-town crowd,” he said. “Winning’s good anytime, but winning here is really special.”
Belle Fourche native and four-time world champion bareback rider Marvin Garrett also was successful over the weekend. He had a 77-point score on D&H Cattle Company’s Jungle Girl to finish seventh and pocket $240. Dustin Reeves from Owanka, S.D., won the event with 84 points ride on Farewell Party, also owned by D&H. Reeves earned $1,801.
A Texan, Jesse Childers from Cameron, won the tie-down roping. He had a blazing fast time of 8.4 seconds to win $2,076. Childers was nearly two seconds ahead of the man in second place. Another Texan, Jim Smith, from Del Rio had a time of 10.1.
